In the civic quarter, in the open

The monument stands in Newcastle city centre, near the Civic Centre. It was raised with ROMA ACCESS — Newcastle Association and is the first in the United Kingdom dedicated to the memory of the Roma and Sinti victims of the Holocaust.

There is no building, no ticket desk and no opening time. You can go at two in the morning if that is when you need to.

Getting there

Five minutes from the Metro

Metro: Haymarket is the nearest station, a short level walk away. Monument station is a little further and, despite the name, is not named after this monument.
Bus: Services to Haymarket bus station and to the Civic Centre stops on Barras Bridge.
Rail: Newcastle Central, then Metro two stops to Haymarket, or about twenty minutes on foot through the city centre.
Car: Blue Badge parking is available near the Civic Centre. There is no dedicated visitor parking at the monument itself.
On foot: The monument is in the civic quarter, close to the university and to Newcastle Civic Centre.

Four requests, none of them enforced by anyone. The monument is unstaffed and relies entirely on the people standing at it.

Not for control — the space is public and nobody needs permission. It is so two coach parties do not arrive at the same moment, and so that a family who came to grieve does not find themselves in the middle of a Year 9 trip.

Combining a visit

Groups coming from outside the region often pair the monument with a museum session or a talk. We can usually provide a forty-minute session at the monument itself, led by a community educator, at no charge to state schools.

The Centre’s correspondence address is not a visitor site. Please do not turn up there.
