Accessibility

Accesibilitate

Cum este construit acest site, ce am testat și ce încă nu funcționează bine.

Target

WCAG 2.2Level AA

A memorial that a blind person cannot read, or that a person using a keyboard cannot navigate, has excluded exactly the people the history is about excluding.

What is in place

Contrast
Body text is white on black or black on white. Every muted grey used for secondary text was chosen to clear WCAG AA against its own background — 6.1:1 on the dark ground, 7.2:1 on the light one.
Keyboard
Everything interactive can be reached and operated from the keyboard. Focus is shown with a two-pixel outline in the current text colour, which stays visible on both grounds.
Motion
Animation is limited to slow fades and one candle flame. If your operating system asks for reduced motion, all of it stops, the scroll-progress line is removed, and smooth scrolling is turned off.
Structure
One h1 per page, headings in order, landmarks on every region, and a skip link as the first focusable element.
Dialogs
The menu, the archive lightbox and other overlays trap focus, close on Escape and return focus to what opened them.
Forms
Every field has a visible label. Errors are attached to their field and announced, not collected in a banner.
Zoom and reflow
The layout reflows to 320px and survives 200% text zoom without content being cut off or requiring horizontal scrolling.
Language
Every page declares its language, and passages in another language are marked so a screen reader pronounces them correctly.

Honest list

What is still wrong

An accessibility statement that lists only successes is marketing.

Long-form translation
Historical text and testimony are in English only. Interface strings are translated into Romanian, and partially into Romani. We will not put machine translation on this material, so this gap closes at the speed volunteer translators can work.
Media captions
There is no published audio or video yet. When there is, no recording will be published without a transcript, and video will carry captions.
Maps
The visiting page has no embedded interactive map, and this is deliberate: embedded maps bring third-party tracking with them. Instead the page gives the postcode, written directions by Metro, bus, rail, car and on foot, and a link that opens the location in Google Maps if you want one.
Testing
This statement records what the site was built to do. An independent audit and testing with screen-reader users has not been carried out yet, and the statement will be amended when it is.
