Photographs & documents

Paper that survived because somebody kept it in a drawer for eighty years.

A note on images

Photographs taken by the police and by racial-hygiene researchers exist in quantity and show Romani people as their persecutors saw them. We catalogue such material where it is evidentially necessary, and we lead with photographs families took of themselves.

A name on the back of a photograph is a record

Most of what is in this collection arrived because somebody decided that a box in a loft might matter. If you hold photographs, papers or objects connected to the persecution of Roma and Sinti — or you are not sure whether you do — an archivist will come and look at them with you. Scanning is free and the originals go back to you.
