Victor Lupu: deported from Budeni-Dolhasca to Transnistria, 1942
On 15 August 1942 the gendarmes came to his village and gave every Roma family three hours to leave. He describes the cattle wagons, the deaths on the road, the burning of bodies at Kovaleovka, and carrying a dead child thirty kilometres on his back because they were not allowed to stop or to bury him. He came home in 1944 to find his father and four brothers dead.

Some people want a camera and two hours. Others want to write it down, or to talk to one person with a notebook, or to say only the parts they can bear and stop. All of that is testimony and all of it is worth having. You set the terms: what is recorded, what is published, what is kept closed for a period of years, and whether your name appears at all.
